WHIZNEWS: ZCT Closes 51st season with 9-5

Hundreds of people tumbled out of bed and stumbled to the theatre this weekend to enjoy Zanesville Community Theatre’s production of “9 to 5.”

Based off the 1980 hit movie starring Dolly Parton, Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda, the musical has been tearing up Broadway in recent years, and Director Jillian Von Gunten wanted to bring that story to Zanesville.

“‘9 to 5’ is about an office, in general,” Von Gunten said. “Three secretaries who are fed up with their jerk of a boss who’s always making them feel unimportant and less than– they take charge, and he gets his comeuppance in the end. It’s a story of their personal growth and growth as a group of people coming together.”

The show features over 15 musical numbers, all written by Dolly Parton. With a lot of music, large cast and detailed sets, taking on this show required a lot of preparation.

“It’s probably the largest show that Zanesville Community Theatre’s ever done,” Von Gunten said. “It’s a big Broadway musical–lots of scene changes, lots of people. So it was a challenge that I wanted to accept and bring that kind of a show to this area.”

While the first weekend of shows may be over, you still have an opportunity to get tickets for this coming weekend. Showtimes are 8:00 p.m. on Friday and Saturday with a 2:30 p.m. matinee on Sunday. The shows are filling up quickly, so you are advised to purchase tickets in advance by visiting www.zct.org or by calling the Zanesville Community Theatre’s box office at 740-455-6487.
