Zanesville
Community Theatre's dedication to serving the community continues. the ZCT
Annual Angel Tree Benefit strives to create a show that embraces the sincerest
meaning of the holiday while serving the needs of community members who find
themselves in unfortunate circumstances. Centered around the holiday theme, ZCT
creates a festive show that celebrates the season including winter wonders,
traditional holiday music and music that may be in future holiday traditions,
tugs at heartstrings and humor. Every year, ZCT's theater also gets a
visit from that 'Gentleman of the North' who brings gifts for all the boys and
girls after the show. It's a Zanesville Tradition that leaves folks with a warm
holiday feeling.
Here's why ZCT's Angel Tree Benefit Show is a successful community tradition:
Everyone who wants to participate can - on stage, behind the scenes, raffle
prize contributors - everyone is welcome and no one is turned away.
The entire show is made up of volunteers who join in the mission of
helping families in need. No member of this production or any ZCT production
gets paid.
ZCT opens the show for a donation instead of their set ticket
price.
ZCT's goal is for families to come and enjoy a holiday show together while
knowing their donation is helping families who are in need.
All monies collected by way of donations or raffle go directly to support the
Salvation Army's cause to help needy families of our area and surrounding
communities. All production costs are paid by Zanesville Community Theatre
and private donations.
The entire Angel Tree Production is successful because members truly believe in
what ZCT's Angel Tree Benefit does for the community.

Note:
Our theatre, being wholly subsidized by our patrons and members from Zanesville and surrounding communities, needed a way to say
'Thank You' and give something back to the community. I thought a community
Christmas show would be just the ticket. With the help of an old friend (Bruce
Revennaugh) we came up with some guidelines
We'd put on two shows
We would write and produce it ourselves
We would give all the monies we garnered to the Salvation Army's Angel Tree
(ZCT's shoppers using the money raised and actually buying the presents
delivered to the Salvation Army)
We would take only donations (no set ticket price)
and
We would cast everybody that auditions
(this would help us find new talent)
Our goal was to put on a quality theatrical production, family oriented, celebrating the season and ultimately help some kids in the
process.
That was 16 years ago.
Friends, family, professional and amateurs - our people have come together to entertain the community, provoking laughter, tears,
introspective thoughts and rejoicing. Raising thousands of dollars and helping hundreds of children - dreams become reality and on Christmas
morning, the gifts we help give seemingly come back ten fold.
When I wrote "One Star" it wasn't about politics. I saw that a family
on the evening news had been told they had lost a loved one. It was only about the 12th (not sure of the exact number) person who lost
their life in our "war against terrorism" and something my sister told me came to mind. She had lost her husband to cancer, he was only 36 and that the first year after he was gone - everything was different - a whole year of firsts, first birthday, first anniversary, first
Christmas....
I thought what a blow it would be if you got this terrible news at the holidays (no time would be a good time) and how
the family and friends
would have to cope. My heart went out to these people. I just wanted the families to know that
people care.
