In times such as these, the world needs the arts more than ever. We especially need community theater! Not only does it provide affordable entertainment for the area, it provides a creative outlet for young and old alike. Children learn the basic tenets of theater but also, and I would argue more importantly, they learn self confidence, discipline, determination, and teamwork. Adults have the opportunity to pretend and become someone else—in essence have time to play! Life-long friendships are formed between participants and the audience. Zanesville Community Theatre is pleased to have served this role for 49 years! This season’s plays explore the wide variety of human emotions. They represent all the aspects of our own human condition – the closeness and conflict that characterize a family in crisis; the zany and often frenetic comedy that pervades our daily lives; the dichotomy between the horror of war and the “normal” existence of those men and women who fight it; the hatred that can fester when we push each other to dangerous and unimaginable extremes, and finally the inner struggle between good and evil, and our fervent hope that good will win. In these plays are many truths – they house the people we wish to be and the ones we hope never to be, and thus they provide guidance and direction, even as they entertain us. As we escape, we learn, we process through our own emotions, and come out stronger as the house lights return to their original brightness. So too, the actors and crew learn so much from the process and each other, and theater provides all those involved with a needed and necessary outlet. Forty nine years in existence is a testament to community spirit and commitment to the arts. With your help, here’s to 49 more! Sheryl Wise | |||||||||||||
