Of Mice and Men, one of the most enduring works in American literature, tells the simple story of the bond between two drifters in Depression Era California. George and Lennie, migrant workers in the Salinas Valley, have become traveling companions as they drift from job to job. Their friendship is based on a shared dream to someday 'live off the fat of the land' and what they give each other: the simple-minded Lennie needs George's brains to get him out of trouble, while George needs his friend's devotion to insulate him during these hopeless times. This delicately balanced partnership, however, meets its ultimate threat when they arrive for work at a ranch along the Salinas River. |
