Directing this play offers abundant challenges both to the directing/creative
staff, as well as the actors. The tale of Willy Loman resounds today as this economy has interfered with a prosperous retirement for many. It’s a story of optimism soured by the inability of life to provide the fulfillment of dreams - both in Willy’s expectations in himself but also for that of his sons.
This show offers a vast array of complexities from each character portrayed. Willy’s disappointments, his life’s evaluations and diminishing expectations and his dwindling mental ability to cope haunt him. The sons share in disappointments of their own. Biff, athletically gifted, charming and easy on the eyes - every quality Willy feels are necessary for a fruitful life. Biff never amounts to much, thus tearing at Willy’s philosophy for a good life. Happy, the little brother in the shadow of Biff, struggling for equal attention and respect from their father. Linda, who loves Willy through thick and thin, but understands the real world a bit better than Willy. Ben and Charley, successful men in the eyes of Willy, but both don’t walk the line of morality. Each character offers actors an opportunity to make their mark.
Show synopsis:
Death of a Salesman centers around the life and expectations of lead character Willy Loman, a traveling salesman who finds the reality of his life and that of his sons, is at odds with his dreams and expectations. It is a gripping window into his world both past and present as they collide. Willy examines his life and where it has led him. He also cannot accept the facts that his sons are also haunted by missed dreams and opportunities. At each turn life is adding a new nail into his coffin. Willy’s inability to transcend these events and realities leads him down the darkest of paths that ultimately result in his demise.
It is an enveloping tragic saga of a common man, an everyman, who, unlike the character of George Bailey in
IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE, cannot find his window of hope that anchors himself.
