King Henry II of England has three sons by Eleanor of Aquitaine: Richard, Geoffrey, and John. He wants the kingdom to stay united after his death, but all three sons want to rule and it is likely to be torn apart by revolution. Henry favors the youngest son while Eleanor favors the eldest. The middle son hopes to play both ends against each other and come out on top. Henry would like to have another heir by his mistress, but that would only add to the contenders. Uneasy is the head on which the crown lies, and uneasy the truce between a matchless king and queen. This mundane history is glorified in language that is brilliant in its ability to characterize, its rhetorical impact, its actability, and its generative power. Few since Shakespeare have had such a marvelous gift for truly comic repartee.

Players & Character Descriptions

Roger Touvell Henry Plantagenet

Henry II, King of England: King Henry has just turned 50 years old but he is still a force to be reckoned with both physically and mentally.

Jillian B. Von Gunten Alais Capet Alais is a serenely beautiful 23 year old who is Henry’s mistress and is unmistakably in love with him.
Sean McClure Richard Plantagenet Richard the Lionheart, age 26, is a famous soldier; powerful, handsome, and impressive. He is very comfortable with power and politics.
Jarrod Reed Geoffrey Plantagenet Geoffrey is a tall, darkly attractive 25 years old. He is quick of speech and movement and is the smartest member of the entire family.
Kevin Lucas John Plantagenet John is a sweet but very goofy 16 year old. John is convinced that Henry loves him best.
Amy P. Underwood Eleanor of Aquitaine Eleanor is a woman of 61 years who looks nothing of her age. She is a truly handsome woman of great temperament, authority, and presence. She is also a genuinely feminine woman thoroughly capable of holding her own in a man’s world.
Ian Milheim  Philip Capet King of France, Philip is a man in his early 30s who has only been King for 3 years but he is very wise for such an inexperienced King. He is open, direct, and simple and he smiles easily.
