The works of William Shakespeare are often regarded with great reverence as hallowed theatrical pieces of historic import from a long-ago time. In some ways this is quite true, but Shakespeare also wrote for the masses. His works were bawdy, humorous and politically charged by his times. Shakespeare’s image has been changed over the centuries, from that of a working playwright and actor who was aiming his works to please the varied crowds who attended his productions. His works were not initially meant to be exalted literature, to be expounded upon by the intelligentsia. They were meant to be viewed by audiences of nobility, but also merchants, groundlings, servants, wise men and fools. Our production gives new voice to Shakespeare’s humor and insight into the human condition – often with a modern twist to echo the Bard’s keen eye for the political follies of his own time. This production is irreverent, lightening quick and sometimes borders on the vulgar, but the parodies are done with great love and respect for the totality of the works of William Shakespeare and the spirit in which they were originally performed.
