Synopsis of the play
Five eccentric little old ladies, using a thunderstorm, their wit and culinary skill, the services of a certified California actor, long-lost family treasure, and the Spirit of a Confederate Captain of Cavalry, take on and ultimately defeat the history establishment in order to save their decaying plantation museum.
The Offspring of the Ladies of the Sacred South
- Cast of characters
(in chronological order)
Rosabelle Periwinkle, (played by Terri Kenney) a tiny and frail, yet vigorous 85 year old woman. She walks with the aid of a cane. She is a descendent of the family which built Magnolia Grove. Though not a native of the town or state, she has been a participant in the house's operation for the last 30 years.
Miss Olivia Wysteria, (played by Darla Revennaugh ) a native. 80 years old and active in he organization of The Offspring. She is presently the Treasurer. She is vigorous and much in love with the house and even more in love with the past.
Roberta Lee Townsend, ( played by Jan Kiikka ) 70 years old and another long-time member and amateur historian. Though one might think she is a hypochondriac, she is not. Her intellectual and creative powers are perhaps sharpest of the Ladies. A retired school teacher.
Mildred Pierce, (played by Susan Barzda) is 60 years old, and gives the impression, both physically and mentally, of being the oldest. Perhaps this comes from having taught elementary school for 40 years. She is never without her handbag.
Mrs. Laurence Worthington-Brown III (Lucille), (played by Angel
Palmer, Jillian Von Gunten) the youngest at 55. She has a hard, sharply-featured face. Magnolia Grove and The Offspring have been both a diversion and a means of social status for her, not that she doesn't have an interest in and respect for the past, but she feels that somehow she has become the personification of both Magnolia Grove and The Offspring. A financially secure and protected life has given her an air of command and she often acts as though those around her exist to serve her.
Buck, (played by Steve Stewart) the caretaker, is an indeterminable age and presents few clues to it. His connection to both the house and site is organic. His mother worked for the last of the family to live in the house.
Henry Baxter, (played by Phil Palmer) a mid-level bureaucrat of a quasi-public regional historical organization. He is in his mid to late forties, clean-cut, easy going. He has spent most of his career in the history business moving paper and has had little recent contact with history, either as an academic discipline or as a consumer product, but for some reason unknown to him, has gone out into "the field" for his most recent project. He wears a dress shirt and tie with khaki pants and topsider shoes.
Caroline Hughes, (played by Stefani Weaver) Baxter's assistant. Around 23. This is her first real job after receiving her Master's. Though properly deferential to her "boss", she is opinionated and intelligent. She dresses "professionally", with a short suit and black stockings.
Jack, (played by Sean McClure) an ex-Californian in his early 20's. A deliveryman for a local supply house. A hip, sloppy actor with wild, black hair, pearly teeth and an earring.
Palmer Motley, Jr., (played by Aaron Laube) a gangly, bony youth of 12 or 14.
The action of the play takes place in and around Magnolia Grove Plantation, located somewhere in the South, in the not too distant past, say....1990.
