Director's Notes on Fiddler on the Roof  Cast and Crew  Show Program

Tevye, a poor milkman in 1905 Russia with five daughters, tries to negotiate life by balancing the religious traditions he believes against the perils of the rapidly changing modern world. He finds out much about himself, his fellow man, his family, his religion, and his God; a God he talks to, chastises, prays to and loves. He discovers what's written in between the lines is as important as the lines themselves and faith is a guiding force more than a mandate.

Even though it's a hundred years ago in a different country, you'll see character you know and feel emotions you've felt, ideals you love and prejudices you hate. People laugh, cry and live and the more things change - the more they remain the same.

Hum along with songs you know and rejoice in the beauty of them if you've never heard them before, that's the magic of Fiddler on the Roof.

Director's Note on "Fiddler on the Roof"

The cast requires men, women and children of all ages. No prepared pieces are necessary at auditions. You'll learn music together and read together, you may be asked to do imporvs or talk about yourself.

Check your schedules - this show is a big commitment. Show dates are the weekends of August 11 and August 18. Don't plan on having much free time during Tech Week. (the week prior to the show) We will work hard, play hard and tell a great story!

Fiddler was not my first play but it was my first community theater experience. Since then I've done literally hundreds of shows, but in my heart, there is a special place for Fiddler.  It is a great story blending music, lyrics, dialogue and dance - taking you on an emotional journey that will always stay with you.  It was the first professional production I had seen. Since then, I've designed the set, twice directed it, played three different characters, choreographed numbers and watched with pride as the audiences "got it".

I was fortunate enough to meet the lyricist Shelden Harnick. I listened to him talk about and participate in a Q&A session and also talk to him one on one. As with all great artists, the attention detail and the amount of his personal life that went into his part of the story was obvious. He spoke with love and fervor and I've never forgotten his passion -  a key ingredient in good story telling.

- Rich Tolliver
